Interfaith Discussion: When Religion & Ethnicity Collide

In lieu of recent hate crimes, the Interfaith Council is holding a discussion on 3rd April Tuesday night, from 6 to 7 pm in the Marsh Room (in the basement of Marsh Chapel):

“What is the role of ethnicity in religion, and how should it be treated?”

All are welcome, and refreshments (tea and cookies) will be served.

On March 21, 2012, Shaima Alawadi–a mother of five, an American citizen, an Iraqi Muslim who wore the hijab–was brutally beaten to death, with a note beside her body left that read, “Go back to your country, you terrorist.”

This tragedy reminds us that, often, religion is tried up with ethnicity and the accompanying issues of assimilation, xenophobia, and violence.

Simmons College: Syrian Fundraising Dinner

Shedding Light on Syria – A Fundraising Dinner

Where: Simmons College-  3rd floor in the Linda K. Paresky Conference Center (LKP)

This Fundraiser dinner is in collaboration with Islamic Relief and is the capstone event to Islam Awareness Week, which SIS is hosting at Simmons College. “Shedding Light on Syria ” is being held to raise funds for humanitarian aid to the Syrian people.

As you may know, the wave of Arab unrest that started with the Tunisian revolution reached Syria in mid-March 2011 and continues to this day. The President of Syria, Bashar al-Assad, has set off a series of brutal crackdowns, sending tanks into restive cities as security forces continue to open fire on demonstrators. There has been much outcry from numerous countries around the world, denouncing al-Assad and the violence, torture, and destruction that his regime has caused and continues to do so. The death toll is in the thousands and the situation in the country dire.

BU Anti-War Coalition Event

The BU Anti-War Coalition is discussing “Terror in the Judicial System Post 9/11: Persecution of Muslims in American Courts”

When: Thursday, February 16th, 7pm

Where: Photonics Building Room 206, 8 St. Mary’s Street Boston, MA 02446

Guest Speakers:

Tamer Mehanna (brother of Tarek Mehanna)

Faisal Hashmi (of the Muslim Justice Initiative)

Nancy Murray (of the ACLU)

Alarming numbers of American citizens are being taken into custody under allegations of terrorism. The Muslim-American community has faced particular judicial discrimination, and Tarek Mehanna’s highly-publicized Boston trial was a perfect example. Now that anyone can be indefinitely detained without charges under the National Defense Authorization Act, the stories of Tarek Mehanna and Syed Fahad Hashmi are more important—and more relevant—than ever. We need to think about what it means to be an American citizen. Act now and learn more at this panel discussion at Boston University.
